Abstract

Distance education is fast becoming a popular mode of education because of its flexibility and accessibility. However, the quality of distance learning programs has been a great concern to education sector and practitioners in the academia. Thus, developing and maintaining high quality assurance in the integrated instructional design and active learning of distance education students is fundamental to their experience. This study examined the impact of quality assurance in distance learning on learning outcome of Ahmadu Bello University students. The specific aim of the study was to look at the impact of instructional design and active learning on students’ learning outcome. The population of the study was 5000 students of Ahmadu Bello University distance learning. A sample size of 344 participated in the study using simple random sampling technique. The study employed cross- sectional survey research design and Partial Least Square (PLS) path modelling for statistical analysis. The findings reported significant impact of instructional design students’ learning outcome (β = 0.264, STD= 0.035, t- value = 7.588 and p-value= 0.000). Similarly, active learning has significant impact on students’ learning outcome (β = 0.264, STD= 0.035, t- value = 7.588 and p-value= 0.000). In the light of these findings, the study therefore concluded that quality assurance of active learning and instructional design can potentially improve students’ learning and experience.
